Heat pump versus AC replacement
A $13,450 median for a heat pump system and $13,780 for a full AC system differ by far less than the width of either range, so our data does not show one costing clearly more. Some heat pump reports pair the heat pump with a furnace (dual fuel) or new ductwork, and we did not separate them.
The mini-split row is a separate ductless job. We did not split it by the number of indoor units or by whether the unit also heats.
Our size and Florida cuts combine AC and heat pump systems, so we cannot price a heat pump by tonnage or by state. In the combined data, Florida had a median of $12,000 across 55 reports. See the AC replacement cost guide for the size and region tables.

What a heat pump is
DOE says the most common type is the air-source heat pump, which transfers heat between your home and the outside air, and that it provides cooling in summer as well as heating in winter. DOE says modern air-source heat pumps can reduce your electricity use by 50% compared to furnaces and baseboard heaters. ENERGY STAR says an air-source heat pump can deliver up to three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes.

The IRS says the energy efficient home improvement credit (section 25C), which listed heat pumps and central air conditioners as qualifying property, is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. A heat pump installed in 2026 does not qualify.
Utility rebates are separate programs. The AC not cooling page lists the Tampa Bay utility rebates we track.
DOE's standards for units made on or after January 1, 2023 require a split-system heat pump to be rated at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. Heat pumps have no regional tier, so the same minimums apply in Florida and elsewhere.
ENERGY STAR certification for split-system heat pumps requires at least 15.2 SEER2, 7.8 HSPF2, and 11.0 EER2. We have no price data split by rating.

What changes the price
Size. ENERGY STAR says the right size comes from a Manual J load calculation, and that a system that is too large may cycle on and off frequently, which causes humidity control problems and inefficient operation.
The indoor unit. AHRI says the outdoor and indoor units must be properly matched to reach the rated efficiency.
Ductwork. ENERGY STAR says about 20 to 30 percent of the air moving through a typical duct system is lost to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. Ductwork jobs had a median of $6,500 (65 reports).
Refrigerant. New residential AC and heat pump systems are limited to refrigerants with a global warming potential below 700 as of January 1, 2025, and EPA says existing systems can still be used and repaired.
Installation quality. ENERGY STAR says improper installation can reduce system efficiency by up to 30 percent.

The repair prices in the AC repair cost guide apply to the parts a heat pump shares with an AC. Trane and Lennox both suggest multiplying the unit's age by the repair cost and considering replacement if the result is over $5,000.
Lennox says heat pumps normally last an average of 15 years, though some wear out after a decade. ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement once a heat pump or AC is more than 10 years old.

Each price is the median of the reports for that job, and "most" is the middle half of them (25th to 75th percentile). Homeowners reported these prices and we did not verify them.
The reports are a mix of quotes homeowners received and invoices they paid, from U.S. posters, and we publish no price for a job with fewer than 10 reports. We link no individual post.

Homeowners reported a median of $13,450 for a heat pump system, with most from $10,000–$20,000 (186 reports).
Is a heat pump more expensive than a central AC?
Not clearly, in our data. The heat pump system median was $13,450 and the full AC system median was $13,780, and each range is much wider than the gap between them.
Does the federal tax credit still apply to a heat pump?
Not for a 2026 installation. The IRS says the section 25C credit is not allowed for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.
What efficiency does a new heat pump have to meet?
DOE requires a split-system heat pump made on or after January 1, 2023 to be rated at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. ENERGY STAR certification for split-system heat pumps requires at least 15.2 SEER2, 7.8 HSPF2, and 11.0 EER2.
Does a heat pump also provide cooling?
Yes. DOE says heat pumps provide cooling in summer as well as heating in winter.
