Repair figures are U.S.-wide; only rows marked Florida are Florida. The posts do not always say what a price included, and people who post are not a random sample. N is the number of quotes behind each figure.

The reports do not give the number of indoor units, which is the likely reason the range is so wide. A single-room system and a whole-house multi-zone system are both in the figure.

What the job is and when you need it

A ductless mini split has an outdoor unit and one or more wall or ceiling indoor units connected by refrigerant and power lines. ENERGY STAR lists where they fit best: homes with costly electric heat, older homes without ductwork, additions and outbuildings, and spaces with hot and cold spots (ENERGY STAR mini splits).

The price question is the zone count. The reported middle half runs from $5,500 to $19,140 (87 reports), and the reports do not say how many indoor units each job had. Ask each bidder to price per head and quote the outdoor unit separately.

Placement and sizing are the decisions that go wrong. ENERGY STAR advises keeping the outdoor unit's airflow clear, placing indoor heads with heat rising and cool air sinking in mind, and using Manual J to size the equipment (ENERGY STAR mini splits).

In Florida an installer must hold an AC license: Class A or B, or a mechanical license. Class C is limited to servicing (F.S. 489.105).

Where this job sits in the system

Mini-split installation: the parts this job touches
Mini-split installation: the parts this job touchesA cross-section of a house. Indoors: a wall thermostat, an indoor unit in a closet with an air filter, blower and evaporator coil, supply ducts in the attic with ceiling vents, a condensate drain line that exits through the wall, and a breaker panel. Outdoors: the condenser unit on a pad, joined to the indoor unit by two refrigerant lines and fed through a disconnect box. Highlighted on this page: Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coil; Refrigerant lines.
  1. ThermostatThe wall control. It tells the system when to run.
  2. Air filterCatches dust before the air reaches the blower and coil.
  3. Indoor unit: blower and evaporator coilThe blower moves the air; the cold coil cools it.
  4. Ducts and ventsCarry cooled air to the rooms and bring return air back.
  5. Condensate drain line, pan and float switchCarries off the water the coil pulls out of the air.
  6. Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coil on this pageMoves the heat from your house to the outdoors.
  7. Breaker panel and outdoor disconnectThe power feed to the system, and its local shut-off.
  8. Refrigerant lines on this pageTwo copper lines that link the indoor coil to the outdoor unit.

Simplified drawing, not to scale. Real systems vary: the indoor unit can sit in an attic or closet, the ducts can run in the attic or under the floor. A mini-split has no ducts or air handler: a wall-mounted indoor unit connects to the outdoor unit by refrigerant lines. Original illustration, not a photo.

Doing the math

Set the $11,300 median against a full central system at $12,000 in Florida. The mini-split middle half starts at $5,500, under the $9,400 bottom of the Florida central-system range, and ends at $19,140, over its $15,600 top.

So a small mini-split system can cost well under a central system and a large one can cost more. Get a per-head price first, then decide whether the extra heads cost less than fixing or extending the ducts.

Check these yourself first

Before installing a mini split to fix a comfort problem, check the free basics on the existing system. If you already have a mini split that misbehaves, our mini-split page lists the safe checks: filters, remote mode, drain line and outdoor airflow.

Utility rebates

Lakeland Electric pays $225 per condensing unit for a mini split heat pump, up to two. Tampa Electric's program excludes ductless mini splits in its own terms. We found no mini-split line in Duke Energy Florida's program.

Questions people ask

How much does a mini split cost to install?

Homeowners reported a median $11,300 across 87 reports, but the middle half runs $5,500 to $19,140 because the reports include systems from one to many indoor units. Ask for a per-head price.

Is a mini split worth it without ducts?

ENERGY STAR lists older homes without ductwork, additions and spaces with hot and cold spots as good fits for a mini split (ENERGY STAR mini splits).

Can I install a mini split myself?

The line set connection and charging are refrigerant work, and a leak at a flare joint is the classic failure of a poor connection. Florida licenses AC contractors to install, and Class C is limited to servicing (F.S. 489.105). We give no steps.

Do Tampa Bay utilities give rebates for mini splits?

Lakeland Electric pays $225 per condensing unit, up to two. Tampa Electric's terms exclude ductless mini splits. We found no mini-split line in Duke Energy Florida's program.
