Mini-split repair in the Tampa Bay outer ring

We have no mini-split repair quotes, but four of the six common problems on our troubleshooter are checks a homeowner can make.

Source for every price on this page: HVACPro analysis of homeowner-reported quotes and invoices in public Reddit posts, 2025-01-01 to 2026-09-29. Repair figures are U.S.-wide; only rows marked Florida are Florida. The posts do not always say what a price included, and people who post are not a random sample. N is the number of quotes behind each figure.

Our reports have no mini-split repair category, so we do not price repairs. The diagnostic fee is the one figure we can state, and the mini-split installation figure is on that page, not here.

What the job is and when you need it

A mini split fails in a few repeatable ways: a dirty filter or coil, condensate that cannot drain, remote or mode settings that are wrong, a blocked outdoor unit, an error code from a sensor or communication fault, or a refrigerant leak at a line connection. The first four are safe to check yourself.

The indoor head drains condensate like any AC, through a small line that can kink or clog. Water dripping from the indoor unit is usually that line, not a refrigerant problem. The outdoor unit needs clear airflow around it, and ENERGY STAR advises keeping it unobstructed (ENERGY STAR mini splits).

Error codes are the boundary. A code for a sensor or communication fault is a diagnosis for the technician.

A code involving the compressor, over-current or the outdoor board sits behind the outdoor unit's electrical panel, which has line voltage and capacitors. Write the code down and the model number before you call, since the code narrows the visit.

Where this job sits in the system

Mini-split repair: the parts this job touches
Mini-split repair: the parts this job touchesA cross-section of a house. Indoors: a wall thermostat, an indoor unit in a closet with an air filter, blower and evaporator coil, supply ducts in the attic with ceiling vents, a condensate drain line that exits through the wall, and a breaker panel. Outdoors: the condenser unit on a pad, joined to the indoor unit by two refrigerant lines and fed through a disconnect box. Highlighted on this page: Condensate drain line, pan and float switch; Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coil; Refrigerant lines.
  1. ThermostatThe wall control. It tells the system when to run.
  2. Air filterCatches dust before the air reaches the blower and coil.
  3. Indoor unit: blower and evaporator coilThe blower moves the air; the cold coil cools it.
  4. Ducts and ventsCarry cooled air to the rooms and bring return air back.
  5. Condensate drain line, pan and float switch on this pageCarries off the water the coil pulls out of the air.
  6. Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coil on this pageMoves the heat from your house to the outdoors.
  7. Breaker panel and outdoor disconnectThe power feed to the system, and its local shut-off.
  8. Refrigerant lines on this pageTwo copper lines that link the indoor coil to the outdoor unit.

Simplified drawing, not to scale. Real systems vary: the indoor unit can sit in an attic or closet, the ducts can run in the attic or under the floor. A mini-split has no ducts or air handler: a wall-mounted indoor unit connects to the outdoor unit by refrigerant lines. Original illustration, not a photo.

Doing the math

There is no repair-versus-replace ratio here because we have no mini-split repair prices. A full install reported a median $11,300 with a very wide middle half of $5,500 to $19,140. Ask the technician for a written quote that separates the part, the labor and the refrigerant.

Check these yourself first

Our mini-split page ranks six causes. Four are homeowner checks: dirty indoor filters, remote or mode settings, a kinked or clogged drain line and a blocked outdoor unit. The other two, an error code and a refrigerant leak at a line connection, are for a technician.

Utility rebates

No utility rebate pays for a mini-split repair. Lakeland Electric's mini split rebate is for installing a heat pump, and the mini-split installation page has the terms.

Questions people ask

Why is my mini split leaking water inside?

Usually the condensate drain line is kinked or clogged, or the indoor filter is dirty. Both are safe checks. If the line is clear and water persists, call a technician.

What does a mini split error code mean?

It depends on the brand, so use the manual for your model. A code for a sensor or communication fault is a technician's diagnosis, and a code involving the compressor or over-current is behind the outdoor unit's electrical panel.

Why is my mini split not cooling?

Check the mode and setpoint on the remote, clean the indoor filter and clear the outdoor unit. If those do not help, a refrigerant leak is likely, and that needs a certified technician.

Why is my mini split making noise?

A rattle can be a loose panel or debris at the outdoor fan, and a hum can be an electrical part. Turn it off if the noise is grinding or the unit smells hot.

These questions come from the topic clusters below in our research on 2,095 mined questions (Mini-split questions: 91; AC not cooling / blowing warm air: 54; Making noise (buzzing, rattling, squealing, banging): 104). The wording and answers are ours; we do not republish anyone's post.
