ENERGY STAR recommends a contractor pre-season check-up every year, in spring for cooling (ENERGY STAR checklist). The cooling items it lists: tighten electrical connections and measure voltage and current, lubricate moving parts, check the condensate drain, check the controls, clean the evaporator and condenser coils, check the refrigerant level, and clean and adjust blower components. If a quote for a tune-up omits most of those, it is a filter change with a service call attached.

The reported range is wide, and the posts do not say what each visit included. Lakeland Electric's rebate names what it counts as a tune-up: refrigerant, thermostat, duct leak, coil and fan or motor checks. That list is a useful minimum for any ring address.

The homeowner half of maintenance is the filter. ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean or change air filters once a month in a central AC, furnace or heat pump (ENERGY STAR checklist). With the ring's cooling seasons running 3,149 to 3,928 cooling degree days (NOAA normals), a monthly check is a fair reading of that advice.

Doing the math

A drain-line or pump repair reported a median $600 (15 reports), which is $220 more than the median tune-up. ENERGY STAR lists a condensate drain inspection as part of the yearly visit (ENERGY STAR checklist). The comparison is not proof a tune-up prevents the repair, but the drain check is on the visit list.

Check these yourself first

Monthly, you can change the filter, keep three feet clear around the outdoor unit and check that the drain is dripping outside. If the system is already acting up, the troubleshooter pages come first.

Questions people ask

How much does an AC tune-up cost?

Homeowners reported a median $380 from 15 reports, and the middle half ran $120 to $530. That is a wide range, and the posts do not say what each visit included.

How often should I change my AC filter?

ENERGY STAR says to inspect, clean or change air filters once a month in a central air conditioner, furnace or heat pump (ENERGY STAR checklist).

When should an AC be serviced each year?

ENERGY STAR recommends an annual contractor check-up before the season it covers, spring for cooling and fall for heating (ENERGY STAR checklist).

Is a rattling or buzzing AC something a tune-up fixes?

A tune-up covers loose connections, lubrication and blower cleaning, which are common noise sources (ENERGY STAR checklist). A buzz or hum from the outdoor unit can also be an electrical part failing, and our noise page sorts the two.

These questions come from the topic clusters below in our research on 2,095 mined questions (Repair / service cost and quotes: 23; Filters, cleaning, maintenance, tune-ups: 60; Making noise (buzzing, rattling, squealing, banging): 104).
