Our data does not separate after-hours calls, so there are too few reports to price an emergency premium.

Repair figures are U.S.-wide; only rows marked Florida are Florida. The posts do not always say what a price included, and people who post are not a random sample. N is the number of quotes behind each figure.
The reports do not mark which calls were after hours, weekends or holidays, so we cannot price an emergency surcharge. Ask for the trip charge and the hourly rate before anyone is dispatched.

Homeowner-reported prices related to emergency AC repair
Most AC failures are uncomfortable and not dangerous, and that decides how to spend the first hour. Real emergencies are the ones with a hazard: a burning smell or smoke at the unit or air handler (switch the system off at the thermostat and the breaker), water leaking near electrical equipment, or a person in the home who cannot tolerate heat.
Heat is the reason people call fast. The CDC warns that electric fans will not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures are really hot, and advises spending time in air-conditioned places such as a shopping mall or public library, and contacting your local health department for shelters (CDC heat guidance). That gives you somewhere to be while a repair is scheduled.
What to ask when you phone: the diagnostic fee, whether it is credited toward the repair, the arrival window, and the total before work starts. Ask for the license number and check it on the state lookup. Check it even on a rush call; the lookup takes a minute.

6Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coil on this pageMoves the heat from your house to the outdoors.
7Breaker panel and outdoor disconnect on this pageThe power feed to the system, and its local shut-off.
8Refrigerant linesTwo copper lines that link the indoor coil to the outdoor unit.

Doing the math
Median diagnostic fee: $190 across 62 reports, middle half $100 to $290. That is the number to hold a dispatcher to. Anything well above the top of that range for the visit alone deserves a question.

Five minutes of checks can turn an emergency into a filter or a breaker: the thermostat mode and batteries, the breaker, the outdoor disconnect, the drain pan float switch and the filter. If any of them fixes it, cancel the call.

No rebate applies to a same-day repair. If the fix turns out to be an emergency replacement, Duke Energy Florida's program allows the required Home Energy Check within 12 months after an emergency install instead of before it. Confirm current terms on the program page.
Water is leaking from my AC. Is that an emergency?
Turn the system off so it stops making water and check the drain line and pan. It becomes an emergency if the water reaches ceiling fixtures or electrical equipment. A drain or pump repair reported a median $600.
What should I do if my AC quits in a heat wave?
Do the free checks, then use an air-conditioned public place while it is scheduled. The CDC says fans will not prevent heat-related illness in very hot weather, and suggests a mall or library and your local health department for shelters (CDC heat guidance).
What counts as an AC emergency?
A burning smell or smoke, water near electrical equipment, or a household member who cannot tolerate heat. Everything else, including a warm house, is urgent but not a hazard in itself. Check the breaker, thermostat, disconnect and drain pan float switch first.
My AC smells like burning. Is it safe to run?
No. Switch the system off at the thermostat and the breaker and call a licensed technician. A burning smell can be an electrical fault, which is one of the hazards our troubleshooter treats as a stop-and-call item.
