What the job is and when you need it

A thermostat is the cheapest part of the system to replace and one of the easiest to get wrong. The middle half of reported jobs ran $500 to $700 across 12 reports. The variables are the thermostat itself and the wiring: whether your system has a common wire, whether it is a heat pump, and whether it is single-stage or variable-speed.

ENERGY STAR's guidance for smart thermostats is direct: make sure the one you buy is compatible with your heating and cooling system, and for the very highest-efficiency equipment, a controller from the same company may be the better match (ENERGY STAR thermostats). It also notes a Wi-Fi thermostat needs to be reasonably close to the router to avoid dropouts.

Most thermostat problems are power problems, not bad thermostats: dead batteries, a tripped breaker, a full drain pan tripping the float switch, or a loose low-voltage wire. Our troubleshooter covers those in order. A blown low-voltage fuse or failed transformer is the point where it becomes a pro job.

Thermostat installation: the parts this job touchesA cross-section of a house. Indoors: a wall thermostat, an indoor unit in a closet with an air filter, blower and evaporator coil, supply ducts in the attic with ceiling vents, a condensate drain line that exits through the wall, and a breaker panel. Outdoors: the condenser unit on a pad, joined to the indoor unit by two refrigerant lines and fed through a disconnect box. Highlighted on this page: Thermostat.

  6. Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coilMoves the heat from your house to the outdoors.
  7. Breaker panel and outdoor disconnectThe power feed to the system, and its local shut-off.
  8. Refrigerant linesTwo copper lines that link the indoor coil to the outdoor unit.

Doing the math

At $580, a professionally installed thermostat is 5 percent of the Florida median full-system price ($12,000). If the quote is well above the middle-half range of $500 to $700, ask what is included: the thermostat, wiring changes or a new transformer.

Check these yourself first

Before buying a thermostat, rule out the free causes: batteries, the breaker for the air handler, a full drain pan tripping the float switch and a loose thermostat wire. About half of the causes on our page are checks you can make yourself.

Utility rebates

No ring utility rebate in our data covers a thermostat. Lakeland Electric's tune-up rebate lists a thermostat check among the required items, so a thermostat problem can be diagnosed under that visit.

Questions people ask

Why is my thermostat blank?

Most often dead batteries, a tripped breaker for the air handler, a full condensate pan tripping the float switch, or a loose low-voltage wire. A blown low-voltage fuse or failed transformer needs a technician.

How much does thermostat installation cost?

Homeowners reported a median $580 across 12 reports, with the middle half at $500 to $700. The reports do not say if the thermostat was smart or basic.

Will any smart thermostat work with my AC?

Not necessarily. ENERGY STAR says to make sure the thermostat is compatible with your heating and cooling system, and that for the very highest-efficiency equipment you may want a controller from the same company (ENERGY STAR thermostats).

Why does my AC turn on and off every few minutes?

A dirty filter, poor thermostat placement or a dirty outdoor coil are the free causes. An oversized system also cycles, and only a Manual J load calculation confirms sizing.

These questions come from the topic clusters below in our research on 2,095 mined questions (Thermostat blank / not working / wiring: 99; Won't turn on / no power / tripped breaker: 47; Short cycling / turning on and off: 25). The wording and answers are ours; we do not republish anyone's post.
