Source for every price on this page: HVACPro analysis of homeowner-reported quotes and invoices in public Reddit posts, 2025-01-01 to 2026-09-29. Repair figures are U.S.-wide; only rows marked Florida are Florida. The posts do not always say what a price included, and people who post are not a random sample. N is the number of quotes behind each figure.

Our repair reports do not separate heat pumps from straight air conditioners, so the repair rows combine both. They are the closest data we have. The full-system row is heat pumps only.

What the job is and when you need it

In summer a central heat pump works the same as a central AC, cooling the house by moving heat from inside to outside. In winter it runs in reverse to heat the house, and ENERGY STAR says a heat pump can deliver up to three times more heat energy than the electrical energy it uses (ENERGY STAR heat pump guide). That reversal is the part an AC does not have.

That matters in the ring because most homes heat with electricity. The Census ACS counts 91 percent of ring homes as electrically heated (Census ACS), and a heat pump is one efficient way to do it. Heating degree days are low, 434 to 676 a year, so a heat pump that fails may go unnoticed until the first cold snap, and a repair is best done before it.

Use the AC repair figures for the shared parts. A capacitor reported a median $310, a control board $930 and a compressor $3,000. Ask whether the problem shows in cooling mode, heating mode or both: a fault that appears only in heating points at the parts that reverse the cycle or at the backup electric heat, and a technician should say which.

Where this job sits in the system

Heat pump repair: the parts this job touches
Heat pump repair: the parts this job touchesA cross-section of a house. Indoors: a wall thermostat, an indoor unit in a closet with an air filter, blower and evaporator coil, supply ducts in the attic with ceiling vents, a condensate drain line that exits through the wall, and a breaker panel. Outdoors: the condenser unit on a pad, joined to the indoor unit by two refrigerant lines and fed through a disconnect box. Highlighted on this page: Indoor unit: blower and evaporator coil; Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coil; Refrigerant lines.
  1. ThermostatThe wall control. It tells the system when to run.
  2. Air filterCatches dust before the air reaches the blower and coil.
  3. Indoor unit: blower and evaporator coil on this pageThe blower moves the air; the cold coil cools it.
  4. Ducts and ventsCarry cooled air to the rooms and bring return air back.
  5. Condensate drain line, pan and float switchCarries off the water the coil pulls out of the air.
  6. Outdoor unit: compressor, fan and condenser coil on this pageMoves the heat from your house to the outdoors.
  7. Breaker panel and outdoor disconnectThe power feed to the system, and its local shut-off.
  8. Refrigerant lines on this pageTwo copper lines that link the indoor coil to the outdoor unit.

Simplified drawing, not to scale. Real systems vary: the indoor unit can sit in an attic or closet, the ducts can run in the attic or under the floor. A heat pump has these same parts and also runs in reverse to heat. Original illustration, not a photo.

Doing the math

A full heat pump system reported a median $13,450 (186 reports; middle half $10,000 to $20,000). A $3,000 compressor is 22 percent of that.

ENERGY STAR's replacement guidance is more than 10 years old for a heat pump or AC (ENERGY STAR replacement guide). On an older unit, price both.

Check these yourself first

The free checks are the same as for an AC: filter, thermostat mode and batteries, breaker and a clear outdoor unit. If the system is not heating or not cooling at all, start with the not-cooling page and the thermostat page.

Questions people ask

Is a failed compressor on a heat pump worth fixing?

A compressor at $3,000 is 22 percent of the reported median full heat pump system. On a system over 10 years old, ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement (ENERGY STAR replacement guide).

Why is my heat pump blowing cold air in heating mode?

It can be normal briefly, as the system cycles, or it can be a fault in the reversing components or a failing outdoor unit. If it persists, call a technician. Our page on the thermostat and the not-cooling page cover the free checks first.

How much does heat pump repair cost?

Our reports do not split heat pumps from AC units. Shared-part medians are capacitor $310, control board $930, compressor $3,000. A full heat pump system reported $13,450.

These questions come from the topic clusters below in our research on 2,095 mined questions (Compressor / condenser / coil / motor failures (pro repair): 239; Thermostat blank / not working / wiring: 99; Heat pump problems (aux heat, defrost, not heating): 66).
